Description
The Lockheed P-3 Orion is a four-engine turboprop anti-submarine and maritime surveillance aircraft based on the L-188 Electra commercial airliner, first delivered to the US Navy in 1962. This plane is most easily recognized by its tail stinger, a "MAD Boom", used for magnetic detection of submarines. This early P-3A (or "Alpha" model) is on static display at the recently decommissioned Naval Air Station in Brunswick, Maine. The P-3 is still in 12 active duty patrol squadrons, two reserve squadrons, and four special project squadrons in the US, as well as in numerous foreign Navy and Air Forces. The P-3 has a flight endurance of 14+ hours with a range of 5000 nautical miles, has a maximum speed of 410 knots, and carries a crew of 13. While I was in the Navy, I flew in the "Bravo" model for 11 years, serving in Patrol Squadron Eleven, based on the U.S. Atlantic coast at NAS Brunswick with deployments worldwide, and functioned as a Sensor Operator and what else?
