Of all the Civil War battlefields that I’ve been privileged to visit, Antietam still remains my favorite. Excellent rendering, Guy. - Mike (V/F)

Great infrared!

Guy Whiteley replied:

I appreciate that. Thank you.

Breathtakingly lovely Guy - such rich contrasts and such a peaceful scene with such devastatingly non-peaceful associations. Incredible work. F/V G+

Guy Whiteley replied:

Thank you, Lianne. I saw that with most of the scenery in Gettysburg and Antietam. So beautiful now, it's really hard to imaging the carnage of the time.

Excellent, your POV is perfect, I have not thought of trying IR before. Most of the examples I have seen are of way out there subjects but your presentation of normal everyday subjects makes it tempting. fv

Guy Whiteley replied:

Thank you, Byron.

That picture almost looks 3D great one. Bridge looks like it pops out at you.

Guy Whiteley replied:

Thank you, Nelson.

Artist's Description

Burnside Bridge. Known at the time of the battle as the Rohrbach or Lower Bridge, this picturesque crossing over the Antietam Creek was built in 1836 to connect Sharpsville with Rohrersville, Maryland, the next town to the south. It was actively used until 1966 when a bypass enabled the bridge to be restored to its 1862 appearance.

On September 17, 1862 fewer than 500 Confederate soldiers manned tis position against three imposing Federal assaults, until Union soldiers crossed downstream and made another attack on the bridge. This image shot with an IR converted Nikon D80 optimized to an 18-70mm Nikkor lens.

About Guy Whiteley

Guy Whiteley

I was raised in northern New York State before joining the US Navy where I became drawn to the technical aspects of film photography. During my travels I learned composition techniques, developing, and printing from serious amateurs and professionals. I eventually became more interested in the artistic side of this hobby and continued to explore more creative aspects. My interests focus (no pun intended) on the out-of-doors beauty of our world, both natural and man-made. I hope you enjoy viewing my images as much as I have enjoyed capturing them.
