Description
The Virginia State Memorial was the first Southern state monument to be erected on the Gettysburg Battlefield. The status honors both the Confederate soldiers of Virginia and their commanding general, Robert E. Lee. The focal point of this massive memorial is the intriguing likeness of General Lee mounted upon Traveller, the horse that faithfully carried Lee through most of the war. The monument is located on the spot where Lee observed the actual battle.
