Description
Originally constructed in 1825, the Sone Bridge carried the Warrenton Turnpike across Bull Run. Its ability to carry traffic across the steep-sided stream, even at times of high water, gave the bridge a key role in the Civil War. Both sides recognized its strategic importance. Confederate troops destroyed the Stone Bridge in March 1862 before falling back to a more defensibly position fifty miles to the south near Frederickburg. The current structure was completed in the 1880s, on the site of the original war-time bridge.
