Description
Nature's Monument - Erected by nature hundreds of millions of years before the battle of Gettysburg, these granite rocks have been transformed by man and by history into granite monuments. It was here, on the second day of the Battle of Gettysburg, that Confederate troops attacked Union troops defending Devil's Den, resulting in a fierce artillery fight and heavy casualties on both sides.
This rugged terrain, strwen with massive boulders, was the site of some of the battle's deadliest fighting. For some the rocks served as cover; for others, a grave. It took years to recover all the dead bodies and the debris that slipped deel into the crevices of Devil's Den during the battle. Today it is one of the most picturesque and provocative sites. Image captured with an IR converted Nikon D80 and 18-70mm lens.
