Description
Atlas in Rockefeller Center. Standing 45 feet tall (Atlas himself is 15 feet), and weighing seven tons, this bronze statue is the largest sculpture in Rockefeller Center. It faces St. Patrick's Cathedral across Fifth Avenue. It was created by sculptotr Lee Lawrie and was installed in 1937. The piece has since been associated with the novel, Atlas Shrugged, by Ayn Rand, despite pre-dating that novel by two decades.
